Greek Counter Terrorism Police arrested 11 suspected members of violent Nazi group “C18 Hellas” last week, during an operation in greater Athens and two provincial towns.

The suspects are allegedly members of the Greek branch of the extreme right wing group “Combat 18” also known as “C18”, which operates in various countries.

A 35-year-old gas station employee from Ioannina, northwestern Greece, is believed to have led the group, ekathimerini.com reports.

“C18” is responsible for bombing attacks against anarchist and migrant related targets and has ties with another violent Greek Nazi group named “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME). Many Greek news outlets failed to mention that both organisations have signed numerous desecrations of Jewish Monuments and Cemeteries in Greece:

  • Oktober 2015: The entrance of the Jewish Cemetery in Nikaia (an area outside Athens) was vandalized with threatening graffiti featuring nazi symbols. “C18 Hellas” posted pictures of the vandalism online, claiming responsibility for the action.
  • December 2014: AME members scrawled swastikas and threats on the wall of the Jewish Cemetery of Larissa, posting photos of their action online.
  • Oktober 2014: AME left its signature on the Athens Holocaust Monument.
  • Oktober 2012: Desecration of the Holocaust Memorial of the Jews of Rhodes. The monument is located in the Old City and the perpetrators painted with paint all six sides, while they painted the swastika, adding the initials AME.

The case (that led to the Greek police counter-terrorism unit acts) was filed after complaints by Greek Helsinki Monitor, based also on articles by XYZ Contagion blog.

Neo-Nazis deface again Greece’s third-largest city with Nazi graffiti

Neo-Nazis from AME (Unaligned Meander Nationalists) have sprayed Nazi graffiti in Greece’s third-largest city, Patras, and then boasted of their vandalism on their website. This is nothing new: Back in February 2016, they posed in Patras again executing Nazi salutes alongside newly-painted neo-Nazi graffiti. The said group has claimed responsibility for the vandalism of numerous Jewish monuments and cemeteries.

NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor has already filed a complaint against AME and Combat 18 (another Greek Nazi group) for previous racist and antisemitic acts. XYZ Contagion blog has also reported that the Greek authorities announced in November 2015 that they were conducting a preliminary investigation about the vandalism of the Athens Jewish Cemetery by Combat 18.

Greek Nazis publish propaganda photos with Nazi salutes & graffiti in Patras

The Greek antisemitic organization “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME) recently posted propaganda pictures of Neo-Nazis performing the Nazi salute in front of racist and antisemitic graffiti in Patras, Greece’s third largest city. The Neo-Nazis claim to be the “Autonomous National Socialists of Patras”. Some of the graffiti read “You Too Can Kill An Albanian”, “We Want Jobs and Not Immigrants”, “National Socialism Now” and “Juden Raus”; they’ re always accompanied by swastikas.

The “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” have signed numerous desecrations of Jewish Monuments and Cemeteries in Greece.

Update: Panayote Dimitras from the NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor told Against Antisemitism that a complaint for previous racist acts of AME and Combat 18 has been filed.

Jewish Cemetery in Nikaia, Athens, with nazi graffiti vandalized

The entrance of the Jewish Cemetery in Nikaia (an area outside Athens) was  vandalized with threatening graffiti featuring nazi symbols (see photos below), reported today the Jewish Community of Athens. This cemetery is adjacent to the 3rd Cemetery of Athens. Its use started just after the War when the Municipality of Athens gave this area to the Jewish Community.

Update: Greek nazi & antisemitic organization “C18 Hellas” posted pictures of the vandalism online, claiming responsibility for the action. They seem to cooperate with the nazi organization “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME). AME, which declares to be a hardcore radical and nationalistic organization and separates itself from “moderate nationalists” of Golden Dawn, has signed the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in the island of Rhodes in October 2012, the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in Athens in October 2014 and the vandalism of the Jewish Cemetery of Larissa in January 2015.

Larissa: After the desecration, the boast / Νέα πρόκληση των «Ανένταχτων Μαιάνδριων Εθνικιστών»

The Coordination Forum for Countering Antisemitism reported that the Greek anti-Semitic organization “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME) posted a picture of four Neonazis in front of the vandalized entrance of the Jewish Cemetery of Larissa (see photo below). These are probably the four persons who scrawled swastikas and threats on the cemetery wall of the Cemetery past December. The organization AME congratulates the „autonomous / unaligned fighters from Larissa“ and quotes an antisemitic saying from the theoretician of anarchy Michael Bakounin. AME, which declares to be a hardcore radical and nationalistic organization and separates itself from “moderate nationalists” of Golden Dawn, has signed the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in the island of Rhodes in October 2012 and the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in Athens in October 2014.

Members of the Jewish Youth of Athens (ENA) gathered on Sunday 2nd of November 2014 in order to erase the anti-Semitic graffiti which was written on the Holocaust Monument of Athens by the extreme nationalist and anti-Semitic organization “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME).
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece congratulates ENA for this initiative, which shows that the new generation is determined to send a strong message that it continues to struggle against racism and anti-Semitism and that it honors and respects the memory of the 60.000 Greek Jews who perished during the Holocaust.

Desecration of the Athens Holocaust Monument for the second time in 2014

On October 30, 2014, the Holocaust Monument in Athens was vandalized with graffiti signed by the extreme nationalist and anti-Semitic organization “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME). This organization –which declares to be a hardcore radical and nationalist organization and separates itself from “moderate nationalists” of Golden Dawn- has also signed the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in the island of Rhodes in October 2012.

The Athens Jewish Community and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following Press Release:

The Holocaust Monument in Athens has been vandalized for the second time within 2014. In the night of October 30, 2014, a known neo-nazi organization, with significant activity in Greece, left its signature on the Monument.
The Athens Holocaust Monument is dedicated to the memory of the 60.000 Greek Jews, part of the 6.000.000 of European Jews, who suffered a tragic death in the Nazi concentration camps.
The Athens Jewish Community, that covered the cost of the erection of the Monument, donated it -in 2010- to the municipality of Athens, in order to make it a landmark in the capital city and a reminder to its citizens and visitors of the most heinous mass crime in contemporary history.
The Jewish Community of Athens, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, and the Greek Jewry at large strongly condemn this act of vandalism. We call upon the municipal and state authorities to effectively protect the Holocaust Monument of the capital, in order to avoid repetition of such phenomena. We also call upon the Justice system to put into motion all necessary procedures so that the perpetrators –those whose hateful and violent actions offend the dignity and the cultural heritage of the city- be apprehend and punished.
We also expect the representatives of the State and the Civil Society to come forward and express a strong and determined condemnation of this specific act as well as of every and any act of anti-Semitism.
