Book bazaar in Athens sells the “Protocols”

Panayote Dimitras from the NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor has reported that the 20th Book Bazaar 2016 which is held at Kotzia Square (Athens) from January 16 until February 7 sells the antisemitic forgery “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” next to “The Communist Manifesto” and a book praising Adolf Hitler [see photo below].

The book bazaar operates under the support of the Municipality of Athens and is sponsored by the Athens 9.84 FM, Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper and the state-owned public radio and television broadcaster ERT.

Update: Andrea Gilbert from the NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor told Against Antisemitism that the “Protocols” are available in a second stand, next to children’s books:

Book bazaar in Northern Greece sells antisemitic publication

It came to the attention of Against Antisemitism – Ενάντια στον αντισημιτισμό that a centrally located book bazaar in Ioannina (or Jannina), the capital of the region of Epirus, sells the antisemitic forgery „The Protocols of the Elders of Zion“ [see photo below]. The book bazaar is held on Averof Street.

Read below our protest (in Greek).

Update, 14/01: The owners of the bazaar responded that they generally oppose censorship of the books sold at the bazaar and believe that the clients should decide themselves if they buy such books or not. We responded that freedom of speech is not unlimited and should be protected by the interdiction of books promoting racism & antisemitism. If Ioannina Book Fest totally opposes censorship, why don’t they sell books praising anti-Greek massacres in the Ottoman Empire or the apartheid in South Africa?

Η απάντηση του bookfest.gr:

σας ευχαριστούμε για την απάντησή σας, αν και δεν λάβαμε συγκεκριμένη διαβεβαίωση για το θέμα του βιβλίου του Ελιγιά. Μας συγκινεί η αντίθεσή σας στη λογοκρισία, αλλά επιτρέψτε μας να προσθέσουμε πως αυτό ακριβώς προασπίζει την ελευθερία του λόγου και της ελεύθερης διακίνησης ιδεών: Ο αποκλεισμός βιβλίων μίσους και νοσηρής προπαγάνδας, στα οποία αρέσκονται φασίστες, ρατσιστές κάθε είδους και αντισημίτες. Με την ίδια λογική, γιατί δεν πουλάτε και βιβλία που εξαίρουν το απαρτχάιντ στη Ν. Αφρική ή τη σφαγή χριστιανικών πληθυσμών στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία;

Church of Greece and extreme right daily Eleftheri Ora sell Protocols of Zion and books by notorious authors Fourakis, Plevris and Golden Dawn’s Goudis

by Panayote Dimitras

30/12/2015

The following article was initially published in “The Books’ Journal”. Translation of the article in English by Andrea Gilbert.

Poster_Apostoliki_Diakonia

The poster at the entrance to the gift shop where the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece sells books that foment archaisms and preach hatred! In the accompanying photos one can see exactly what the Church means when it refers to books and reading. The Books’ Journal

Hand in hand with Eleftheri Ora, the newspaper of conspiracy theories and balderdash, the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece headed by the Archbishop Hieronymus trades in those most eminent books promulgating conspiracy theories, antisemitism and extremist nationalism. [TBJ]

The Church of Greece’s silence regarding the revelatory, documented accusation on the website XYZ Contagion that we republished here three days ago confirms the Church’s accord with racial extremists.

We visited the bazaar on Aiolou Street on December 29th only to find the entrance dominated by the poster for the bazaar, which boldly features the insignia of the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece and in smaller letters the newspaper Eleftheri Ora.

On the shelves of the bazaar alongside numerous conspiracy books, we saw among others “The Secret Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, Giannis Fourakis’ “Zionist Conspiracies”, Kostas Plevris’ “Viglatores” [Sentinels], and the “Patriotic People’s Will” by Christos Goudis, the Golden Dawn member of the Athens Municipal Council.

Shame then on the President of the Apostolic Ministration Archbishop Hieronymus and on the entire Church, which remains silent, complicit if not approving. Shame, too, on the supposedly leftist Tsipras government, which also maintains its silence over this activity of the highest governmental agency. In the future, the Greek government should not complain when this embrace with the worst racism is discussed in the UN as Greece, in 2016, comes under examination for how it does (not) combat racism.

Finally, how is it that the Central Jewish Council of Greece is not disturbed?
