Announcement by the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece

During the Easter holidays, various customs take place in our country. One of these is the “burning of the effigy of Judas”, which takes place in some areas of the country. This custom perpetuates stereotyped perceptions against the Jews. It is significant that the custom has almost been eliminated in the rest of Europe.

In the past, we, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, have repeatedly proceeded with representations to competent bodies in order to stop the custom in our country. The fact that the Church of Greece, with its Synodic Circulars of 1891, 1910 and 1918, demanded that “these customs are expressly forbidden” is of particular significance.

We believe that this custom not only offends the Greek Jewish community but also affects every effort towards the understanding and respect of common values that characterise Judaism and Christianity. We hope that everyone will eventually contribute to the abolition of this custom that does not serve the spirit of love and reconciliation which is conveyed during the days of Easter.

In the evening of Monday July 17, 2017, an individual dressed as a monk who calls himself ‘father Kleomenis’ – a cult figure, popular for his bigot ideas and You tube posts – attacked and vandalized the Holocaust Monument in Larissa, situated in the central Jewish Martyrs Square of the city. In his video posted on You Tube, the alleged monk curses the Jews, denies the Holocaust and calls on the local patriots of Larissa to intervene and demolish the Monument. “Father” Kleomenis spits, kicks and throws eggs at the Monument. Some of his characteristic quotes: “Here, we read 6 million! Fairy tails… Shit on their faces, merely 600.000 Hitler wiped out!”. Kleomenis spits the Monument and says: “Satanic Jews”. He kicks the Monument and says: “Curse on your dirty Monuments” and continues: “Worms, Jewish bitches, this has to fall. The stinking Jewishness has to be taken down from Larissa. Rise up! Patriotic organizations of Larissa take it down, bring the bulldozer on!”. Local police was notified and legal procedure was enacted. Investigation is ongoing. The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) and the Jewish Community of Larissa issued press releases. The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church issued an announcement disassociating itself from the “monk” and condemning his actions.

The Municipality of Larissa issued an Announcement condemning the attack. The General Secretary of Religious Affairs George Kalantzis, as well as the General Secretary for Transparency and Human Rights Maria Giannakaki reacted swiftly by providing the Public Prosecutor of Larissa, the Racist Crimes Department of the Police, and the Cyber Crime Police Department with the relevant evidence. The President of the Jewish Community of Larissa pressed charges against the perpetrator. The Greek Helsinki Monitor also pressed charges against the “so called ‘father Kleomenis’ for a series of racist crimes”.

Piraeus Metropolitan Seraphim Sued for Antisemitic Remarks

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece reports:

The Metropolitan Bishop of Piraeus Seraphim, repeated his fierce anti-Semitic rhetoric in his announcement of April 28, uploaded on the official website of the Archdiocese of Piraeus. This reaction was triggered after the Holy Synod overturned its initial decision to appoint Seraphim as the Greek Orthodox Church’s representative to the ceremony lighting the Holy Light of Easter (taking place  every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem during the Great Saturday). In Seraphim’s place, another Metropolitan, Athinagoras of Ilion, represented the Church in the ceremony.

As a response, in his long anti-Semitic libel announcement, Metropolitan Seraphim claimed that he was replaced because Israel declared him as persona non grata and accused Israel of interfering with the Church’s issues. He also specified that his views are not anti-Semitic but anti-Zionist and that Orthodox Christians stand against Zionism and especially against the wing of Zionism that seeks world domination. Seraphim also quoted the Old Testament and the New Testament, which he interprets through his anti-Semitic and Jew-Hating views, and accused all the other Christian doctrines of being in favor of Jews. He also quoted the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and referred to masonry (and other international organizations) as the arms used by Zionism to secure infiltration and state manipulation.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following announcement, protesting against this new anti-Semitic attack, while NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor filed a lawsuit against Seraphim for anti-Semitism.

Antisemitic rally held in Thessaloniki

A rally against the new electronic “card of citizen” gathered hundreds of people in front of the oversized statue of Alexander the Great in Nea Paralia of Thessaloniki, reports journalist Sofia Christoforidou. Laypeople and members of the Greek Orthodox organization “Agios Vasileios” protested the “instruments of Antichrist and the New World Order” holding religious icons, banners, Greek and Byzantine flags. One of the banners featured the message: “No to the card of citizen. There is only one enemy: The international Zionism.”

Antisemitic publications with titles like “The Jewish-Zionist vampire Soros is thirsty for Greek blood” were available for purchase during the demonstration. The protesters shouted slogans against “the Jewish” Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yiannis Boutaris.
One of the speakers was the excommunicated Abbot Methodios, who at a similar rally in Athens a few weeks ago threatened the Jews with a “Greek Hitler”. In Thessaloniki, he suggested again that the Christians are enslaved by “the Jews”. He also said that the Jews “were cannibals, when the Greeks were building Parthenons.” His Jew-hate rant was warmly applauded, reports Sofia Christoforidou.

Excommunicated Orthodox Abbot warns the Jews of the coming of a “Greek Hitler”

According to Vice Greece, around 4,000 people protested at Athens’s Propylaia earlier this week the forthcoming Greek ID cards, which will be issued with a microchip carrying the holder’s NI number. The rally was organized by Greek Orthodox zealots, the so-called followers of the Old Calendar, and was attended by members of the Nazi Golden Dawn party.

Abbot Methodios from the Esfigmenou monastery addressed the demonstrators accusing the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Greek politicians for trying to destroy the Orthodox traditions and deliver the country to the Jews. The abbot said that the Greek people don’t need the “Jewish money” in order to survive and threatened them with a new Hitler:
“If the Jews are complaining that Hitler came and killed them [some protesters cry out: lies!], they should be careful this time, because a Greek Hitler might come. They should be very careful!”
The abbot’s Jew-hate rant was applauded by his supporters.
Update: Abbot Methodios represents a rebel community of zealot monks excommunicated for heresy. Read more

Church of Greece and extreme right daily Eleftheri Ora sell Protocols of Zion and books by notorious authors Fourakis, Plevris and Golden Dawn’s Goudis

by Panayote Dimitras

30/12/2015

The following article was initially published in “The Books’ Journal”. Translation of the article in English by Andrea Gilbert.

Poster_Apostoliki_Diakonia

The poster at the entrance to the gift shop where the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece sells books that foment archaisms and preach hatred! In the accompanying photos one can see exactly what the Church means when it refers to books and reading. The Books’ Journal

Hand in hand with Eleftheri Ora, the newspaper of conspiracy theories and balderdash, the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece headed by the Archbishop Hieronymus trades in those most eminent books promulgating conspiracy theories, antisemitism and extremist nationalism. [TBJ]

The Church of Greece’s silence regarding the revelatory, documented accusation on the website XYZ Contagion that we republished here three days ago confirms the Church’s accord with racial extremists.

We visited the bazaar on Aiolou Street on December 29th only to find the entrance dominated by the poster for the bazaar, which boldly features the insignia of the Apostolic Ministration of the Church of Greece and in smaller letters the newspaper Eleftheri Ora.

On the shelves of the bazaar alongside numerous conspiracy books, we saw among others “The Secret Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, Giannis Fourakis’ “Zionist Conspiracies”, Kostas Plevris’ “Viglatores” [Sentinels], and the “Patriotic People’s Will” by Christos Goudis, the Golden Dawn member of the Athens Municipal Council.

Shame then on the President of the Apostolic Ministration Archbishop Hieronymus and on the entire Church, which remains silent, complicit if not approving. Shame, too, on the supposedly leftist Tsipras government, which also maintains its silence over this activity of the highest governmental agency. In the future, the Greek government should not complain when this embrace with the worst racism is discussed in the UN as Greece, in 2016, comes under examination for how it does (not) combat racism.

Finally, how is it that the Central Jewish Council of Greece is not disturbed?

Greek Orthodox Bishop blames the “Zionist Monster” for the Cohabitation Agreement

Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus (source: Wikipedia)

In an announcement posted on the website of the Metropolis of Piraeus, Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus is threatening to cut off official relations with any member of the Greek Parliament that votes in favor of the amendment to include same-sex couples in the Cohabitation Agreement.

“About seven years ago parliament passed a law allowing couples to establish civil partnerships,” thetoc.gr reports. “However this right was restricted to heterosexual couples, a fact which ultimately led to the measure being condemned by the European Court of Human Rights for unfair discrimination.”

In his statement, Bishop Seraphim denounces the institutionalization of “the subversion of human ontology and physiology” and “the psycho-pathological diversion from the healthy human sexuality.” Furthermore, he claims that “the Internationalist Zionist Monster” wages a “constant war” on the “real faith” and believes that this “monster” is behind all Greek governments since 2007. Seraphim praises the Greek Communist Party for distancing itself from the new Cohabitation Agreement.
Back in 2010, the Bishop claimed during an interview on Greek television that “Adolf Hitler was an instrument of world Zionism and was financed from the renowned Rothschild family with the sole purpose of convincing the Jews to leave the shores of Europe and go to Israel to establish the new Empire.” He added that Jewish bankers like “Rockefeller, Rothschild and Soros control the international banking system that controls globalization.”

The following amateur video has become popular during these days on the Greek social media. This Greek Orthodox monk lives in Mount Athos more than 55 years and openly states his opinion about the political situation in Greece: he praises the Golden Dawn party, makes racist comments about the immigrants, claims that the Jews hate Greece and predicts a new World War that would end only when all homosexuals would be put to death.

Το JTA για τον αντισημίτη Μητροπολίτη / Leading priest blames Jews for Greece’s problems

Αναδημοσιεύουμε σήμερα το ρεπορτάζ του αγγλόφωνου ειδησεογραφικού πρακτορείου JTA (The Global News Service of the Jewish People) σχετικά με τις πρόσφατες αντισημιτικές δηλώσεις του Σεραφείμ Πειραιώς στο MEGA (βλ.

Leading priest blames Jews for Greece’s problems

December 21, 2010

ATHENS, Greece (JTA) — A high-level priest on the morning show of the largest television station in Greece blamed world Jewry for Greece’s financial problems.

The Metropolite of Piraeus Seraphim also blamed world Jewry for other ills in the country during his appearance on Mega TV.

Mixing Freemasons with Jewish bankers such as Baron Rothschild and world Zionism, the Metropolite said that there is a conspiracy to enslave Greece and Christian Orthodoxy. He also accused international Zionism of trying to destroy the family unit by promoting one-parent families and same-sex marriages.

Thirteen minutes into the program the Greek host asked the Metropolite, “Why do you disagree with Hitler’s policies? If they are doing all this, wasn’t he right in burning them?”

The Metropolite answered, “Adolf Hitler was an instrument of world Zionism and was financed from the renowned Rothschild family with the sole purpose of convincing the Jews to leave the shores of Europe and go to Israel to establish the new Empire.”

Jews such as “Rockefeller, Rothschild and Soros control the international banking system that controls globalization,” the Metropolite also said.

The Metropolite of Piraeus Seraphim is not the only Greek priest with such extreme ideas, as Salonika’s Metropolite Anthimos also has preached similar ideas from his pulpit.

“Watching and listening to the program, I felt disgust hearing the Metropolite of Piraeus expressing himself like that against world Zionism, and shamelessly saying that Hitler with the help of Jewish bankers did what he did,” said Benjamin Albala, president of the Athens Jewish community.

The American Jewish Committee on Wednesday called on the heads of the Greek Orthodox Church to condemn the Metropolite’s statements.

“Seraphim’s horrendous lies on Greek TV demonstrate that anti-Semitism is alive and well within the Greek Orthodox Church,” said Rabbi David Rosen, AJC’s international director of interreligious affairs, in a letter to the head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Greece, Archbishop Ieronymos II, as well as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. “It is the responsibility of the church leadership to condemn and uproot anti-Semitism.”

The European Jewish Congress called for the priest’s removal.

“It is completely unacceptable that someone senior in a mainstream European religious denomination can make such repulsive and hate-filled claims,” said EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor in a statement. “That they were said so openly on national television demonstrates that there are those who feel no shame expressing these views in front of a wide audience.”

“We call on the Greek government to implement its laws against such hate-speech and the leaders of the Greek Orthodox Church to immediately remove this person from his position.”
