Antisemitic targeting of Pfizer CEO in Greek national daily

Via Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS):

Daily “Makeleio”, known for frequently publishing incendiary anti-Semitic articles, on November 10, 2020, circulated with yet another anti-Semitic front-page title related to the announcement made by Albert Bourla, the CEO of the Pfizer pharmaceutical company, on the upcoming vaccine for covid. The front-page (as well as the teaser of the on-line Makeleio.gr)  is illustrated with the photo of the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele next to the photo of Dr. Bourla whose Jewish faith is used in the title to disseminate stereotypical propaganda, while in the surtitle of the front-page the term “poison” is used for the vaccine.

The Greek Jewry’s outrage was expressed with the following announcement of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), which was followed by the immediate reaction of the General Secretary for Religious Affairs, Mr George Kalantzis, who issued the statement below: [Read both statements in English here]

  • Greek Helsinki Monitor has filed a criminal complaint to the Prosecutor concerning the antisemitic headline in Makeleio newspaper.
  • A Greek court in October 2020 convicted the Makeleio newspaper over an antisemitic article targeting Minos Moissis, the former President of the Jewish Community of Athens.

Greek Counter Terrorism Police arrested 11 suspected members of violent Nazi group “C18 Hellas” last week, during an operation in greater Athens and two provincial towns.

The suspects are allegedly members of the Greek branch of the extreme right wing group “Combat 18” also known as “C18”, which operates in various countries.

A 35-year-old gas station employee from Ioannina, northwestern Greece, is believed to have led the group, ekathimerini.com reports.

“C18” is responsible for bombing attacks against anarchist and migrant related targets and has ties with another violent Greek Nazi group named “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME). Many Greek news outlets failed to mention that both organisations have signed numerous desecrations of Jewish Monuments and Cemeteries in Greece:

  • Oktober 2015: The entrance of the Jewish Cemetery in Nikaia (an area outside Athens) was vandalized with threatening graffiti featuring nazi symbols. “C18 Hellas” posted pictures of the vandalism online, claiming responsibility for the action.
  • December 2014: AME members scrawled swastikas and threats on the wall of the Jewish Cemetery of Larissa, posting photos of their action online.
  • Oktober 2014: AME left its signature on the Athens Holocaust Monument.
  • Oktober 2012: Desecration of the Holocaust Memorial of the Jews of Rhodes. The monument is located in the Old City and the perpetrators painted with paint all six sides, while they painted the swastika, adding the initials AME.

The case (that led to the Greek police counter-terrorism unit acts) was filed after complaints by Greek Helsinki Monitor, based also on articles by XYZ Contagion blog.

Piraeus Metropolitan Seraphim Sued for Antisemitic Remarks

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Metropolitan of Piraeus Seraphim (source: wikipedia)

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece reports:

The Metropolitan Bishop of Piraeus Seraphim, repeated his fierce anti-Semitic rhetoric in his announcement of April 28, uploaded on the official website of the Archdiocese of Piraeus. This reaction was triggered after the Holy Synod overturned its initial decision to appoint Seraphim as the Greek Orthodox Church’s representative to the ceremony lighting the Holy Light of Easter (taking place  every year at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem during the Great Saturday). In Seraphim’s place, another Metropolitan, Athinagoras of Ilion, represented the Church in the ceremony.

As a response, in his long anti-Semitic libel announcement, Metropolitan Seraphim claimed that he was replaced because Israel declared him as persona non grata and accused Israel of interfering with the Church’s issues. He also specified that his views are not anti-Semitic but anti-Zionist and that Orthodox Christians stand against Zionism and especially against the wing of Zionism that seeks world domination. Seraphim also quoted the Old Testament and the New Testament, which he interprets through his anti-Semitic and Jew-Hating views, and accused all the other Christian doctrines of being in favor of Jews. He also quoted the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and referred to masonry (and other international organizations) as the arms used by Zionism to secure infiltration and state manipulation.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following announcement, protesting against this new anti-Semitic attack, while NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor filed a lawsuit against Seraphim for anti-Semitism.

Antisemitic graffiti by left-wing party on the island of Andros

On the road leading into Hora, the capital of Andros, Andrea Gilbert from Greek Helsinki Monitor found in July 2016 a wall covered with graffiti. This was leftist graffiti, the red by supporters of the Laiki Enotita (Popular Unity), the breakaway farther left party that spun off SYRIZA after the referendum, one year ago. Briefly, the slogans support the past glory of the OXI (or NO) vote, purporting to shed the yoke of EU occupation. The black writing is the work of Antifa (far left ‘antifascist’ group), purporting to denounce the existence of ‘fascists’ everywhere, “even on Andros”. The Star of David is used in association with the evils of NATO, capitalism, the EU, etc… all linked to force of Zionism.

Andrea Gilbert commented on Facebook: “The slogans are old, but is this graffiti? The paint should have faded in the elements over the course of a year. No matter, though. The real offense here is not so much that this graffiti was done, so much as the fact that the administration of this manicured village and pristine island has allowed them to remain, for anyone entering the town to see. For even a day, much less for over a year!”

Neo-Nazis deface again Greece’s third-largest city with Nazi graffiti

Neo-Nazis from AME (Unaligned Meander Nationalists) have sprayed Nazi graffiti in Greece’s third-largest city, Patras, and then boasted of their vandalism on their website. This is nothing new: Back in February 2016, they posed in Patras again executing Nazi salutes alongside newly-painted neo-Nazi graffiti. The said group has claimed responsibility for the vandalism of numerous Jewish monuments and cemeteries.

NGO Greek Helsinki Monitor has already filed a complaint against AME and Combat 18 (another Greek Nazi group) for previous racist and antisemitic acts. XYZ Contagion blog has also reported that the Greek authorities announced in November 2015 that they were conducting a preliminary investigation about the vandalism of the Athens Jewish Cemetery by Combat 18.

Greece: Abusive trial of University Rector and anti-Nazi activist after Golden Dawn complaint!

PRESS RELEASE

23 August 2013

Greece: Abusive trial of University Rector and anti-Nazi activist after Golden Dawn complaint!

[via http://cm.greekhelsinki.gr/index.php?sec=194&cid=3830]

ghm-english-new(h_r) Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) denounces as doubly abusive the trial scheduled to be held on 3 September 2013, before the Athens Single-Member Misdemeanors Court, of the former Rector of the National Technical University of Athens Konstantinos Moutzouris and of the Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party Sabetai Matsas. The full charges translated in English by Greek Helsinki Monitor follow. The charges are doubly abusive. First and mostly because the defendants are accused of having caused a breach of the peace through the initiation of violent actions by participants in a publically assembled crowd, but no such violent actions are described in the charges and no dates of such alleged actions are mentioned. Secondly, because the defendants are charged for texts uploaded on the university’s and the party’s website which are political discourse that, even if considered that they may “offend, shock or disturb,” are protected by the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. These texts may in no way be classified as incitement which supposedly led to a breach of piece and to ensuing violence.

It must be noted that the referral to trial was decided at the end of a judicial investigation following a complaint filed on 8 May 2009 by “neighborhood committees” of Athens which were in effect front organizations of the neo-Nazi political party Golden Dawn (XA), against the defendants as well as another half-dozen anti-racist NGOs, three political parties and the national secondary school teachers’ union, who were not referred to trial. This is why the prosecutor has called as witnesses to support the prosecution’s charges the current XA MP Elias Panayotaros whose parliamentary immunity has been lifted for a referral to trial on charges of aggravate defamation in an unrelated case, a notorious XA activist Themis Skordeli whose trial for stabbing three Afghans in September 2011 has been postponed eight times (!), as well as four other well-known XA figures.

The charges (translated in English by GHM)

The first of the defendants, Konstantinos Moutzouris, son of Ioannis, in Athens, during the months of January 2009 and May 2009, with more than one acts that constitute a continuation of the same crime, intentionally provided any form of assistance to others (…) prior to and during the commission of the wrongful act of article 192 of the Criminal Code, committed by unknown others. Namely, as Rector of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), he allowed the use of optic fibers that had been allocated to the above educational institution by the National Research and Technology Network SA (EDET AE), a subsidiary company of the Ministry of Development, by unknown operators of the internet website “Athens Indymedia,” despite the fact that it is forbidden to provide free services for purposes other than educational or research. The [unknown operators], in their posts on the above website during the above time periods, publically provoked and agitated citizens to violent actions amongst themselves and to mutual discord, thus committing a breach of the peace. [The operators accomplished this] with the following web posts: “they also called for a gathering in December, which for some reason they canceled because we would have taken their scalps during those days”; “the organizers should know that there’s a war going on, or rather the civil war has never stopped”; “may God help to fuck their Lady Mary”; “Cops and nazis [are part of] the same shop”; “the class duty of the national traitor [is] fire again at the unknown soldier”; “of course we’ll go down [there] to break their heads”; “fascists, your grandparents are in the wells of Meligala, you, for now go back to your holes.” All these phrases were aimed at inciting the volition of others to [commit] a particular illegal behavior by stirring the emotions and the abhorrence of one group of citizens towards another, resulting in a breach of the peace, through the initiation of violent actions with unified forces against persons and objects by participants in a publically assembled crowd.

The second of the defendants, Sabetai Matsas son of Benakis, in the above place [Athens] and on May 8, 2009, he publically and, in one way or another, publically provoked and agitated citizens to violent actions amongst themselves and to mutual discord, thus committing a breach of the peace. Specifically, as Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, he posted on the above party’s website an announcement of the rally in which this party was participating. The full content of the announcement is as follows: “The audacity of the paramilitary gangs oversteps all bounds. A few months after the assassination attempt against the immigrant unionist Konstantina Kuneva, and through an ongoing pogrom against immigrants by the state, the cutthroat paramilitary gangs are threatening to make another appearance on Saturday afternoon in central Athens. Let us prevent them with a decisive, mass presence in an antifascist assembly of trade unions and political organizations at 5 p.m. in Omonia Square! to rip off the hand they are laying on our immigrant colleagues and on our democratic rights and freedoms! As in December [when] we all rose up together, local and foreign workers and youth, now, too, we will confront the paramilitary bullies who have police protection. Throughout Europe, wherever the snake’s egg is incubating again through the spasms of the systemic crisis [there] is a mass antifascist action by workers, unemployed youth, through unions [and] political organizations, [which] sets up a barrier and protects rights and freedoms (…). The government and the state have the primary responsibility for fomenting the fascist phenomenon by cultivating a climate of social automatism, an authoritarian police state, by attempting to declare the country a state of emergency. At the same time the state has absolved government officials involved in racist activities; it acquits cutthroat paramilitaries; it promotes the formation of detainment camps for immigrants. [We must] Close the offices of Chryssi Avgi [Golden Dawn]; no tolerance for cutthroat paramilitaries. The people don’t forget; [send] the fascists to the gallows.”

The above text was aimed at inciting the volition of others to [commit] a particular illegal behavior by stirring the emotions and the abhorrence of one group of citizens towards another through simplified generalizations, thus transgressing the boundaries of legitimate protest and expression of opinion, and resulting in a breach of the peace through the initiation of violent actions with unified forces against persons and objects by participants in a publically assembled crowd.

They are charged with the violation of articles 1, 14, 16, 17, 18 items e-d-b, 26 para. 1a, 27 para 1, 47 para 1, 51, 53, 79, 83, 192 of the Criminal Code.

Desecration of the Holocaust memorial in Rhodes (via GHM)

Ta Nea 27/10/2012 – George Zahariadis

Unknown persons desecrated the Holocaust Memorial of the Jews of Rhodes. The monument is located in the Old City and the perpetrators painted with paint all six sides, while they painted the swastika, adding the initials AME, apparently referring to some, and unknown so far, organization.

The incident happened at the night hours of Friday to Saturday and was seen in the morning. The Security Police of Rhodes was alerted and they conduct an investigation; in the area of the monument was found a sponge used by perpetrators to paint.

It is noted that several times in the past unknown persons had vandalized that monument.

The Holocaust Memorial was erected in 2002 to Jewish Martyrs Square, which was the old Jewish quarter of Rhodes before the war. In the six sides is written in as many languages (Greek, French, English, Italian, Hebrew and Ladino), the phrase “Do not ever forget the eternal memory of the 1604 Jews of Rhodes and Kos who perished in Nazi death camps.”

Prewar Jewish community of Rhodes was one of the most flourishing on the island, but in July 1944 the Germans on the island gathered the 1600 Jews and after an eventful journey led them to Auschwitz. Of these, 1,200 were driven directly to the crematoria, while eventually were rescued by Allied forces only 150 (120 women and 30 men). Today in Rhodes live very few Jews.
